How to compare current accounts

Thinking about getting a new current account? Not sure how to find one with competitive interest rates on your credit and overdraft? Or with the facilities you want?

We can help you compare current accounts from over 30 financial providers in about five minutes. Sounds too easy? It is.

Compare current accounts with us

By working with uSwitch.com, we are able to offer you a free and impartial comparison of UK current accounts. We ask you what you want so we can find the best accounts to match your needs. Do you want an overdraft? Do you want online banking? Et cetera.

There are two types of calculators depending on what you want to do:

  1. Switch accounts
  2. Apply for a new one

Both comparisons show you the following for each account:

  • The amount of interest you will earn
  • Any charges you’ll have to pay
  • The rate for your credit interest and overdraft
  • Special features, such as introductory offers

If you’re thinking of switching, then we show you how much you could save compared to your existing account. Plus you can dig deeper and read details about the account and the provider.

Deciding which current account to get

There’s a plethora of different current accounts out there. Some have fees, others don’t. Paying a fee is usually compensated with other benefits, like higher interest on your savings and lower interest on your debit balance. You may also get other offers or discounts, such as free insurance, cinema tickets or legal services, like will-writing.

If you’re a student, graduate or youngster, you’ll also be eligible for special accounts. These accounts may offer incentives for saving or low overdraft interest rates. Plus, banks often try to entice you with gifts, like CDs or discount cards for restaurants.

When you complete your comparison, you can include the types of accounts relevant to you. So, if you’re a student, just tell us and we will include student accounts in your results. You can then make an accurate decision about which account is best for you.

Switching your current account

Switching your current account is easy. There’s nothing to worry about. Your new provider will look after everything and move all the arrangements you have on your existing account to your new one.

And you can keep using your existing account and card until you have received your new one.

Applying for a current account

Once you have found the perfect account for your needs, you may be able to apply on our site. We let you know the requirements before directing you straight to their website to complete the online application. It’ll take about ten minutes to complete the application.
