How to compare UK credit cards

Banks are elbowing each other out of the way to get to you. They want your business. There are hundreds of UK credit cards available, each trying to lure you with offers, like cashback, or even just a pretty piece of plastic.

The choice, then, is yours. Which credit card do you want to use? Hmm. It’s not such an easy decision. It would probably help if you knew something about what’s on offer.

Sounds like hard work? It’s not. We’ll do most of it for you. We work with uSwitch.com to provide you with a free and impartial comparison of all cards on the UK market.

All you have to do is tell us how you use your card. We break down our search into two distinct categories:

  • Balance transfer cards. Switch the balance from your existing card (or cards) to a new one
  • New cards. Find a new card that offers benefits according to the way you use it

The different types of UK credit card

There’s more to credit cards than a low APR. The type of card you should get depends on how you use it. We’ll ask you a few questions to work this out. Here’s the logic behind our calculations.

  • The sensible spender. Do you pay your credit card balance off in full before the interest kicks in? If so, then it really doesn’t matter about the interest rate. You would benefit from a card that offers rewards for your spending. Think about getting a cashback card, which gives you a small percentage of your spending back. Or, you could opt for reward schemes like Air Miles and Nectar.
  • The rare user. If you barely use your card, keeping it just for the odd purchase, then you could opt for an affinity card. These cards are linked to a charity or organisation. You could, for example, get one associated with your favourite football team or car. Each affinity card works differently, but it may donate a percentage of your spending to the affiliated charity (or political party). Or it might offer you special benefits, like discounts on your car insurance.
  • The player. If you’re financially savvy and don’t mind moving your credit around, you could play the ‘card tart’ game and take advantage of great introductory offers. You could get a card with an introductory 0% rate and then move on once it ends.
  • The fritterer. Got a credit card debt? Transfer your balance to a card that offers either a long introductory 0% rate, or a guaranteed low rate for the life of your balance. You could save hundreds of pounds in repayments.
