Not currently on broadband? You will be up and surfing within three weeks. Your provider sends you any equipment you need, such as a modem and an installation CD.

Already have broadband? You will be given a migration date. The new provider transfers your account using a MAC number that you need to get off your current provider. You lose your service for about 20 minutes. If you switch to a cable provider – ntl or telewest – they will organise a time for an engineer to come and install it in your home. But, don’t worry, it’s normally free.

Tied into a contract? If you’ve been in a contract for less than 12 months, then you may have to pay a penalty to switch. Check the terms of your deal to find out.
